ANZAC's and Communication

We are learning about ANZAC day this week.  We have also been learning about Communication so we investigated ways that the ANZAC's communicated. One of the ways the soldiers communicated was by using flags and the semaphore alphabet.  We made our own flags and were able to communicate a long way away from each other.  In this photo we are attempting to make the first letter of our names.

Here is a link to the semaphore alphabet

New Duffy Books!

We had a visit from Denzal, our Duffy Role Model today.  He told us all how reading books helped him to get the most amazing job, working with Rugby, Hockey and Netball players.  He also won a trophy for body building.  Denzal has a great passion for books and we found him really inspiring to listen to.  We also loved getting our new books.  Have a look at our choices.

Holidays!

We have all just had 2 weeks off school and some of the children in Room 20 went on amazing adventures.  These are a few photos that were shared with the class.  If you've got a great holiday photo, send it in!

SPCA

The children in Room 20 love animals, and a small group decided to help the SPCA.  First they designed some posters asking for donations.  They asked for blankets, towels and toys.  Then they went around to all the classes in the school and told everyone about the SPCA.  Over the next few weeks we had lots of donations arriving in Room 20.  Look at all the things these guys collected!
The blankets and towels filled up 5 whole boxes and Mrs Farrelly's car was stuffed full!  The whole lot was delivered to the SPCA in Mangere. Room 20 got a thank you letter from the SPCA and there is something else special happening soon!

The SPCA also said that children and families are welcome to visit the centre and see what work they do, maybe even meet some of the animals.

Thank you Devon, Ella, Kaylan, Josh and Nikira, you did an amazing job.

Baking ANZAC Biscuits

As part of our learning about ANZAC day, Room 20 made some ANZAC biscuits.  We took turns measuring out the ingredients and mixing them all together.  They smelled delicious when they came out of the oven, and tasted even better when we ate them!

Our First Duffy Assembly

A big welcome to Mr Peter Fa'afiu who was the role model at our very first Duffy assembly.  He spoke about how important it is to read books and to share your knowledge with others.  After his speech Mr Fa'afiu gave out the beautifully decorated Duffy book boxes.  Once back in class we all received our 2 free books.  We were very excited about our new books!
